Why China Is Recalling 4.3 Million Cars Over Their Door Handles

China is recalling roughly 4.3 million vehicles over a design feature that once symbolized the clean, futuristic look of electric cars: the hidden electronic door handle. Tesla and eight other automakers are involved in the campaign, which has been described as the country's largest automotive recall.
Flush handles can improve a vehicle's visual simplicity and may offer a small aerodynamic benefit. Their weakness appears in a very different situation, however. After a severe collision, the electrical system may fail, leaving an occupant or other occupants dependent on a mechanical release that is difficult to locate or operate. Outside rescuers may face the same problem when they need immediate access to the cabin.
Tesla is recalling nearly 3 million vehicles in China. Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Geely, XPeng, and other manufacturers are also carrying out recalls or updates. The remedy may include software changes, warnings, and measures designed to make emergency releases more visible and easier to use.
The recall follows a new mandatory safety standard from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. From January 1, 2027, new passenger vehicles will need a mechanical release function for their doors. Previously approved models will receive a longer transition period. The rule targets fully hidden designs rather than every door handle that sits close to the vehicle's surface.
The policy illustrates a broader principle in product design. minimalism is useful when it removes clutter without removing meaning. In an emergency, though, a control must be easy to recognize and operate even when the user is frightened, injured, or working without power. A handle that disappears into the body of a car may look elegant in a showroom, but safety is measured in the moment when appearance matters least and access matters most.
