About Level Read

Many people study English for years and still feel frustrated when they open a real English news story.

You may be interested in the topic, but once you start reading you quickly look up words, translate long sentences, and guess the context. You finally understand one sentence, then get stuck on the next.

Little by little, your attention is no longer on the news itself.

You only wanted to find out what happened, but it has turned into another English exercise.

We created Level Read to make this a little easier.

We choose news worth reading from the real world, then rewrite the same story at different levels of English.

If your English is not strong yet, start with an easier Level. The words are more common and the sentences are shorter, but you are still reading about real things: technology, sport, culture, animals, scientific discoveries, and important news from around the world.

Simpler English does not mean the content has to become childish.

Your English may still be at Level 1, but your interests, experience, and curiosity are not limited to Level 1.

That is why we like graded reading.

It does not make the world smaller. It gives you a way into the world.

We are all reading about the same world. We just enter it through different doors.

We do not believe that learning English always has to begin by challenging yourself.

Often, what makes people want to keep reading is a much simpler feeling:

Today, I really understood something.

You know what happened, understand why the people acted as they did, and know how things ended.

Of course, you will meet new words and expressions along the way.

But they are no longer lonely lines in a vocabulary list.

A user told us that words they had tried to memorize many times finally stayed with them because they saw them in a news story they truly cared about.

We love hearing feedback like that.

Some words grow slowly out of reading.

You remember more than their meaning. You may also remember the match, discovery, or curious story where you first saw them.

The dictionary, translation, audio, Word Book, and Quiz are not meant to turn one story into more study tasks.

They are there to help you keep reading when you get stuck.

Since Level Read launched, we have been happy to see many people start at a Level they can accept.

Some people read just one story each day.

Some read the easier version first and then see how the same idea is expressed at a higher Level.

Others keep reading and slowly turn it into a natural part of each day.

When they open Level Read, they are not always thinking, “I should study English today.”

Sometimes they simply want to see, “What happened today?”

We think that is a good change.

Language is worth learning. Words, grammar, and pronunciation all matter.

But language is first of all a tool.

It helps us understand a story, understand another way of expressing an idea, and move a little closer to the world.

Level Read wants to make English less of a barrier to understanding these things.
