Robot Ran Faster Than Usain Bolt

Tiangong Ultra, a Chinese humanoid robot, ran 100 metres in 9.39 seconds in a preliminary heat at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. Organisers said the robot won its heat. The event brought together more than 2,000 robots and 666 teams.
The time attracted headlines because it is numerically quicker than Usain Bolt's 9.58-second men's 100-metre world record. Bolt set that official athletics mark in Berlin in 2009. Another robot was reported to have run 9.47 seconds, also below Bolt's time.
However, this comparison needs careful context. Bolt's mark belongs to a human athletics event governed by rules for human competitors. The robot result came from a separate robotics competition. A humanoid robot has different mechanical parts, mass, energy supply and control systems. Those differences mean the two performances cannot simply be treated as the same sporting test.
The result is still important. Fast, stable running requires robots to coordinate movement and balance at high speed. It shows that humanoid robotics is developing quickly. The useful lesson is not that a machine has replaced Bolt: it is that before comparing two numbers, we should compare the conditions that produced them.
