A passenger ferry overturned in the Java Sea on Sunday. The ship, Virgo Transport 8, was going from Surabaya to Banjarmasin. It had 243 people on board: 213 passengers and 30 crew members.
The captain said the sea was rough and the ferry was starting to tilt. Soon after, contact with the ship was lost. Officials said waves were about three metres high. A helicopter later saw that the ferry was upside down, not under the sea.
Rescue teams found 107 people alive and six people dead. About 130 people were still missing. Nearby ships saved survivors before rescue boats arrived. The search was difficult because the sea was still rough. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
