Can You Wash Underwear and Socks Together?

Can underwear and socks go in one washing machine load? For most healthy households, they usually can. A normal wash with detergent removes dirt, oils and many microorganisms. Clothes do not need to be completely sterile to be safe to wear again.
Water, movement, detergent and rinsing work together during a wash. Drying matters too, because many microorganisms grow better in damp places. Underwear and socks should both be washed after each wear.
There are exceptions. Use extra care if someone has vomiting, diarrhea, a contagious skin infection or a weakened immune system. Very muddy clothes and delicate fabrics may also need to be washed separately.
