Foreign Tourists Skip Beijing and Shanghai for Rural China

More foreign visitors are adding China's countryside to their trips. They may still visit Beijing or Shanghai, but some also choose tea fields, mountain villages, local food and family guest houses. They want a slower pace and a closer look at local life.
A CNA report says better roads, high-speed rail, easier entry rules and social media are helping. China welcomed nearly 23 million foreign visitors in the first half of 2026. That was 20.4% more than a year earlier. A Trip.com report said bookings at its rural retreats rose 50% in 2025.
Rural travel can be harder. Visitors may need translation apps, help with payments, and a guide for remote places.
