In China, Couples Can Now Get Married in a Bank or Metro Station

Across China, marriage registration is increasingly being presented as both a public service and a life event. In Tianjin, a bank branch has begun hosting registration appointments on certain mornings. In Hefei, Anhui province, a permanent registration office inside Xingfuba Metro Station has become a local attraction since opening in early 2024.
The station's name carries a wordplay on happiness, which helps explain its appeal. More than 5,600 couples had registered there by August 2026. The site combines the formal work of civil-affairs officials with photo areas and other features that give the appointment a ceremonial atmosphere.
Similar experiments have appeared in shopping malls, parks, scenic areas, hotels, and music festivals. The locations vary, but the principle is similar: move a government service into places where people already spend time, and make an administrative process feel more personal.
The trend is unfolding against a long decline in marriage registrations. Official figures show that registrations peaked at about 13.47 million in 2013. Although changing the location of a registration office cannot solve the deeper economic and social reasons behind delayed marriage, it can reduce inconvenience and create a more positive experience for couples who do decide to marry.
The experiment also reveals how public services are adapting to expectations about experience. Public services must adapt as people's expectations change. A marriage certificate is a legal document, but receiving it can also be a symbolic beginning. For some couples, a bank or metro station may make the moment easier to remember. For officials, these venues offer a way to connect convenience, ceremony, and everyday urban life without changing the legal process itself.
