Some Job Interviews Now Use AI

More job seekers now meet AI systems early in hiring. An AI interview can use text messages, a phone call, a video chat, or a digital avatar on screen. The avatar's almost-human face may make people uncomfortable. This reaction is sometimes called the uncanny valley.
Greenhouse surveyed 2,950 active job seekers in the United States, Britain, Germany, Ireland, and Australia. Greenhouse said 63% of U.S. respondents had been interviewed by AI. It also said 38% had left a hiring process because it included an AI interview.
Companies may use AI to ask large numbers of people the same questions and give recruiters a structured record of answers. Still, candidates may not know how their answers are being used. Greenhouse said 70% of U.S. respondents were not clearly told beforehand that AI would evaluate them.
AI interviewing does not mean every system judges faces, eye movements, or tone. HireVue says its AI-scored video assessments analyze the transcript of what a candidate says. It says they do not use facial expressions, body language, appearance, background, or tone of voice.
