Robot Ran Faster Than Usain Bolt

At the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, a humanoid robot called Tiangong Ultra ran 100 metres in 9.39 seconds in a preliminary heat. Organisers said it won that heat. Another robot reportedly ran the distance in 9.47 seconds.
The figures drew attention because Usain Bolt's men's 100-metre world record is 9.58 seconds. Bolt set the official athletics record in Berlin in 2009. On a clock, 9.39 is faster than 9.58.
Still, the result is not a new human athletics record. A robot contest and a human track race are different competitions. They can have different equipment, power systems, designs and rules. A number only becomes meaningful when we know the conditions behind it.
The event included more than 2,000 robots and 666 teams. The striking result shows rapid progress in robot movement and balance. It does not prove that a robot has defeated the world's fastest human sprinter. Many people watched with surprise and interest.
