Tesla and eight other automakers are recalling about 4.3 million vehicles in China. An automaker is a company that makes cars. The companies are concerned that some electronic door handles may be difficult to use during an emergency.
Many electric cars have handles that sit flat against the body or appear only when someone touches a sensor. This gives the cars a smooth appearance and may reduce a small amount of air resistance.
However, a serious crash can damage the electrical system. If the car loses power, passengers may not know where the manual release is or how to use it. Rescue workers outside the vehicle may also lose valuable time trying to open the doors.
Tesla is recalling nearly 3 million vehicles. Other companies, including Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Geely, and XPeng, are also involved. Some repairs will use software updates or clearer instructions for emergency releases.
China plans to require a mechanical release function for new passenger-car doors from January 1, 2027. The change shows that a product can be attractive and modern while still needing a safer design.
