Supporters are raising millions to protect Wooroora, a cattle station in Queensland, Australia. Its rainforests and woodland provide homes for southern cassowaries, tree-kangaroos and koalas. At least 12 threatened animal species have been recorded there.
Bush Heritage Australia wants to buy the property and create a nature reserve. By late October, donations had passed 19 million Australian dollars. The target is A$24.7 million by December 24, covering the purchase and the first five years of care. However, more money is needed and the purchase is not complete.
Wooroora is beside Yourka, an existing reserve. Connecting protected areas could give animals more space to find food, find partners and move away from difficult conditions. Such links are called wildlife corridors.
The property also lies on the traditional lands of the Jirrbal people. Private ownership has made access to some important places difficult. Bush Heritage says it has worked with Jirrbal representatives on the proposed purchase. Community members hope to help care for the land and protect cultural places.
