Some young people in China are sharing ways to enjoy city life without spending much. A South China Morning Post report on October 31 described online interest in a "zero-cost lifestyle". One example is mall walking: visiting shops to explore rather than to buy things.
Friends can enjoy interesting displays and walk together. Other low-cost activities include visiting parks and free public events. A "colour walk" turns a normal walk into a game: choose a colour and look for it around the city.
Living costs and job uncertainty can encourage careful spending. Simple outings also offer relaxation after work, with little planning. However, transport or snacks may still cost money, so these days are not always completely free.
There are costs for businesses too. Free samples and test drives use products and staff time. Online posts also cannot show how all young Chinese people spend their weekends. Many still shop, travel and eat out, mixing cheaper activities with occasional treats.
