Why Are Families in China Getting Smaller?

Wednesday, October 28, 2026110 words2 minutes198 reads
Fewer people are sharing homes in China. A 2025 survey says the average home had 2.52 people. In 2000, it had 3.44. These numbers count people living together, not all their relatives.
Why is this happening? People have fewer children. Some marry later or stay single. Young adults may move to cities for work. Some couples choose their own homes. Older parents may then live together or alone.
Imagine two parents and their two children. Both children move away. The family still has four people, but they live in different homes. Living apart can give people more freedom. However, older people and parents with young children may need more help.
