Twelve Long-Hidden Paintings Head to Auction

Sunday, October 4, 2026117 words2 minutes2521 reads
Twelve paintings from a private collection will sell at Sotheby's in New York on November 18. The paintings include works by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Paul Cézanne. It is the pre-sale estimate for all twelve paintings: about $450 million.
Some of the paintings have not been shown publicly for more than 50 years. One Van Gogh painting, Châtaigniers en fleurs, has an estimate of about $180 million. An estimate is the price an auction house thinks a work may sell for. It is not the final sale price. Famous paintings do not always hang in museums. A family or private collector can keep a painting at home, in storage, or lend it to a museum.
