Foreign Tourists Skip Beijing and Shanghai for Rural China

Foreign tourism in China is rising, and visitors are extending their trips beyond the usual big-city route. CNA reported that China welcomed nearly 23 million foreign visitors in the first half of 2026, up 20.4% from a year earlier. A Trip.com report found a 50% year-on-year rise in inbound bookings at its affiliated rural retreats in 2025.
The appeal is not only scenery. Travellers interviewed by CNA described bamboo-raft rides, village food, local markets and time spent in quieter places. Tourism academics said improved infrastructure has made many villages more accessible. Social media videos and recommendations from friends can also introduce visitors to destinations they might not have considered.
Still, the headline needs a limit. The evidence shows growing interest in rural travel, not that foreign visitors have stopped going to Beijing or Shanghai. Rural tourism is also booming among domestic travellers: official estimates cited by CNA recorded about 793 million rural-destination visits in the first quarter of 2026. That domestic figure should not be treated as a count of foreign tourists.
Challenges remain for international visitors. Language barriers, local transport, payment options and unfamiliar digital services can turn curiosity into frustration. Researchers suggested bilingual information, foreign-card acceptance and translation support. The trend may grow if smaller operators can offer authentic local experiences while making the journey easier to navigate.
