China Adds Trains for Golden Week

The scale of China's 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day rail travel is not only a tourism story. The 16-day travel period runs from September 23 to October 8, and China State Railway Group expects 284 million passenger trips. Its peak plan calls for about 13,000 passenger trains per day. At Shanghai Hongqiao during busy periods, reporting says a train arrives or leaves roughly every five minutes.
Moving so many people depends on system capacity. Train speed matters for a trip, but it is only one part of capacity. A railway must also fit services through shared track, turn trains around, assign platforms, board passengers, and recover from small delays. A busy station can become the limit even when trains are fast.
The operator plans several ways to expand capacity temporarily: night high-speed trains, additional sleeper services, linked trainsets, and extra carriages. Shanghai rail stations expect 8.53 million departures and will add 146 pairs of trains on popular routes. They also plan to monitor ticket availability and waiting-list data so capacity can be changed where demand is strongest.
The lesson is not that railways can remove every queue. It is that a transport network works best when its parts flow together. Frequency, clear passenger routes, well-timed schedules, enough space, and fast recovery can make a large holiday movement more manageable.
