Can You Wash Underwear and Socks Together?

Underwear and socks can usually be washed in one load in healthy homes. The important question is whether the laundry is washed and dried appropriately. The American Cleaning Institute says ordinary detergent washing, including cold water, generally suits healthy households.
Laundry is cleaning, not sterilisation. Water loosens and dilutes soil; movement helps remove it; detergent suspends oils; rinsing carries material away. Heat adds microbial reduction only when fabric can tolerate it. Full drying matters because microorganisms grow more easily in damp conditions.
The CDC says it is safe to wash a sick person's dirty laundry with other items when handled and cleaned properly. Still, vomiting, diarrhea, a contagious skin infection or a weakened immune system may require more caution. Follow care labels, choose the warmest appropriate setting, and dry items completely.
Sorting still matters. Very muddy socks can make it harder to clean lightly soiled clothes. Dark dyes, rough fabrics and zippers can damage delicate underwear. People with athlete's foot should keep feet clean and dry, change socks daily, and avoid sharing socks or towels. Separate things when health, dirt level or fabric care requires it, not simply because socks and underwear are together.
