Zheng Qinwen's tennis career was interrupted by an elbow injury. She had surgery in 2025 and missed months. Her ranking fell. At this year's China Open in Beijing, Zheng got a special chance to play. She received a wild card, which gave her a place in the main competition.
Zheng reached Sunday's women's singles final against Mirra Andreeva, this year's French Open champion. Andreeva was the higher-ranked player, but Zheng won 7–5, 6–4. She saved three chances for Andreeva to take the first set. Then she won that set and took the second.
The result made Zheng the first Chinese woman to win the China Open singles title. It was also her first WTA 1000 title, one of the biggest types of titles on the women's tour. She had not won any tournament since Tokyo in 2024.
The final was sold out. Some cinemas around China showed the match live. Zheng had said that home fans gave her energy but also made her feel pressure. Her victory brought an injury comeback and a Beijing first together in one evening.
