Social Media and Weak Yen Draw Young Britons to Japan

Japan has become a major travel choice for young British people. The Japanese National Tourism Organization recorded 483,157 British visitors in 2025. This was 24.8% higher than in 2024 and 40.8% above 2019, a common pre-pandemic comparison year. Provisional figures suggest the rise continued in 2026.
Social media is a powerful influence. TikTok and Instagram videos show ramen, convenience-store snacks, temples, anime culture, Mount Fuji, and the lights of Tokyo and Osaka. Several travellers told the BBC that seeing these posts encouraged them to go.
A weak yen adds to Japan's appeal because visitors can get more value after they arrive, although flights still cost money. Many tourists follow the Golden Route between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. The concentration of visitors can create long queues and pressure at famous sites. Tourism officials face a challenge: spread travel benefits without harming daily life or historic places during the busiest seasons of the year.
