Man Rescued Alive From Nepal Tunnel After Ten Days

Chinese national Lu Haitao was rescued alive from a tunnel at Nepal's Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project about 10 days after floods devastated the area. The Nepali army said Nepali personnel and foreign rescuers brought him out. He was evacuated by helicopter and reported to be in stable condition.
Reuters said he was rescued from a 225-metre tunnel. The day before, two Nepali workers were pulled alive from another Upper Trishuli 3A tunnel. Lu was the third person known to have survived in tunnels connected with the hydropower sites.
The disaster began on August 26, when ice, rock and mud rushed through a Himalayan valley. Reuters reported more than 1,300 deaths and thousands missing at the time of its report. Those totals may change as authorities continue searching and identifying victims.
A tunnel can have different sections, but public reports do not say what allowed Lu to survive. His experience is not a general survival guide. Thick mud, debris, water and damaged infrastructure have made access difficult for search teams. The rescue shows why authorities may continue checking underground spaces.
