Hong Kong cancelled a planned light display on The Peak on October 29 after public opposition. The hill is famous for views of the city, but its quieter walking paths also attract people who enjoy nature.
The Tourism Board wanted lights and projections along a circular walk to attract evening visitors. The display was initially planned for one year, running from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Officials promised soft lighting and limited effects on trees and nearby homes.
However, construction closed parts of the paths, and some plants and trees were removed. Critics feared the project would damage the area's natural beauty. Officials considered reducing the display locations from ten to seven and using about 24 trees instead of 52.
The smaller design raised another question: would it still attract enough visitors? Officials decided there was no urgent need to continue, especially with other winter events planned. The Board promised to remove installed equipment and restore affected areas. The display was cancelled before opening.
