Flood Disaster Near Nepal-Tibet Border

A destructive flash flood struck the Himalayan border region between Nepal and Tibet on 26 August. Water moved quickly through valleys and hit communities, roads and hydropower projects. A flash flood is a sudden flood that can become dangerous very quickly.
Officials reported at least 98 deaths across Nepal and China. They also said hundreds of tourists, workers and local people were missing. Nepal's Tourism Board received preliminary lists from travel companies, but those lists were still being checked. Different reports gave different totals.
Many people in the area were travelling to or from Mount Kailash, a sacred place for many Hindus. The monsoon season can make mountain travel difficult. Officials warned people to stay away from river banks and follow safety advice.
Nepal requested help from India and China for the rescue effort. Researchers said an ice-and-rock avalanche from a glacier may have helped cause the surge, but investigations were continuing.
