Cyborg Roaches Tested for Disaster Medicine

Researchers at the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales have made paramedic cyborg cockroaches. The insects are North Queensland giant burrowing cockroaches. They can carry lightweight electronics, including cameras and miniature injection devices. The researchers call the animals "paraborgs".
An implanted electrode lets an operator stimulate the insect's nervous system and steer it. One observer cockroach can use a camera to find a target. A second cockroach can carry drugs in an auto-injection system. The system is designed for human-supervised emergency care in narrow, debris-filled places.
In controlled laboratory tests, the cockroaches reached designated checkpoints in every trial. The complete navigation-and-injection task succeeded in 72% of trials. When an injection began within 15 centimetres of the target, the success rate rose as high as 95%.
This does not mean the insects are ready for an earthquake rescue. The tests used silicone targets and pig skin. Complex terrain, lost signals and injection safety are still challenges. Researchers hope the insects could someday help people before rescuers can reach them.
