Flydubai flight FZ1073 left Dubai for Tel Aviv on September 30 with 174 passengers. It later diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia after a serious cockpit incident. Flydubai said an altercation occurred in the flight deck and that crew members secured the aircraft.
Flight-tracking data showed a sharp descent during the emergency. The aircraft went from about 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in about one minute, according to Flightradar24 data reported by the Associated Press. It then reached Tabuk safely.
The plane first transmitted 7700, an international code for a general emergency. It later sent 7500, which signals unlawful interference with an aircraft and can include a possible hijacking. These codes show controllers that an aircraft needs urgent attention; they do not, by themselves, explain the cause.
Saudi Arabia's safety center has opened an investigation. The airport said the captain and first officer were injured and went to hospital. The airline arranged another flight for passengers. Officials have not established a motive, and reports about an attempted crash remain unconfirmed.
