Chinese Retirees Swap Homes to Travel Without Hotel Costs

Saturday, November 7, 2026165 words3 minutes1063 reads
Some Chinese retirees are exchanging homes for holidays instead of booking hotels. According to a November 3 South China Morning Post report, online groups help people arrange these exchanges. There is usually no room fee, and guests can use a kitchen and wash clothes.
Xiao Ping, a 40-year-old man who retired early, exchanged his spare home in Guangdong for a house in Guizhou. During his 20-day visit, he cooked meals and met local people. Another traveller, retired engineer Li Feng, exchanges her spare apartment about twice a year.
Retirees often have time for longer trips outside busy holiday periods. Swapping homes may reduce accommodation costs and create chances to make friends. However, it requires trust: guests could damage furniture, and online photographs may not show every problem.
People should check identities and agree on cleaning, bills and damage before travelling. Written agreements can help clarify responsibilities. Home swapping will not suit everyone, and there are no clear national figures showing how many Chinese retirees participate.
