Chinese Quarantine-Box Factories Pivot to Luxury Cabins

Chinese prefabricated-home factories are looking abroad after demand fell at home. Reuters reported that Hebei Shengtai Integrating Housing moved beyond container-style quarantine units and temporary worker accommodation. It now makes more stylish prefab homes for export markets.
The export shift is visible in the data. China’s prefabricated-building exports rose from $1.7 billion in 2020 to $4.3 billion in 2025, according to customs data cited by Reuters. The United States, Southeast Asia, Australia and Western Europe are key markets.
Factories can work quickly because their supply chains are close together. In Weifang, steel structures, insulation panels, doors and windows are available nearby, and Qingdao’s port is about a two-hour drive away. Sun Guangqing says his firm can build a home in 15 to 25 days.
But exports are not an easy win. Strong competition has cut prices and squeezed margins. Sun said his popular expandable house now sells for below 20,000 yuan, leaving only 1,000 to 2,000 yuan profit per unit.
