Why Are Young Chinese Couples Changing Wedding Traditions?

Thursday, October 22, 2026164 words3 minutes434 reads
A young couple in China's Zhejiang province chose a wedding without four common extras: collecting the bride, wedding cars, a professional host and a video team. Their September celebration focused instead on food and guests. Chinese media called it a “four no's wedding.”
Large weddings can involve months of planning, many guests and an exhausting schedule. Couples may feel pressure to meet relatives' expectations. Some younger people now prefer smaller gatherings or skip services they do not value. Saving money, reducing stress and expressing their personalities can all influence these choices.
However, simpler does not always mean cheaper. The Zhejiang couple still spent about 70,000 yuan on banquet food in the bride's hometown. They also traveled to Yunnan for wedding photographs. Their choices show a different set of priorities, rather than avoiding every expense.
Customs vary across families and regions. Some parents see ceremonies as signs of respect and connection. Many couples still enjoy traditional weddings, while others combine older customs with new ideas.
