Marriage registration in China is moving beyond traditional government offices. In Tianjin, one bank branch now offers marriage registration on selected mornings. In Hefei, the Xingfuba Metro Station has provided the service since early 2024.
The station's name is linked to the idea of happiness. More than 5,600 couples have registered there. The station also has places for photos and other small services, so a legal appointment can feel more like a ceremony.
Other cities have opened registration points in shopping malls, parks, tourist attractions, and music festivals. Government officials still check the documents and issue the marriage certificates. The new location simply brings the service closer to people's daily lives.
These changes come after a long fall in China's marriage registration numbers. Local governments hope that a more convenient and memorable experience will appeal to young couples. The new approach does not change the legal meaning of marriage, but it changes the setting around it.
