China Adds Trains for Golden Week

The 2026 rail holiday travel period in China lasts 16 days, from September 23 to October 8. China State Railway Group expects high demand because trips for tourism, family visits, and leisure happen at the same time. It plans a peak timetable with about 13,000 passenger trains each day.
This is an example of capacity. Capacity does not only mean how fast one train travels. Capacity includes how many trains the network can run. It also includes how many passengers fit on each train and how quickly a station can manage arrivals and departures. Adding more cars or linking two trainsets can increase space without building a new line.
Railway operators are using night high-speed trains and extra sleeper services on selected busy routes. They use ticket and waitlist data from the 12306 platform to adjust capacity and ticket allocations. In Shanghai, stations plan extra trains and may keep waiting rooms open overnight.
These steps do not make every trip shorter. Instead, they aim to make the system more reliable when many people want to travel at once.
