Many people worry that washing underwear and socks together will move germs from one item to another. For most healthy households, a normal wash load is usually safe. The American Cleaning Institute says they can wash laundry with detergent at ordinary temperatures, including cold water.
A washing machine does not make clothes sterile. It removes dirt, body oils, smells and enough microorganisms for normal use. Water and movement loosen material. Detergent holds oils and dirt in wash water, and rinsing carries much away. Drying fully matters because damp conditions support microbial growth.
Sorting by color, fabric and dirt level can matter more than separating underwear from socks. Dark socks may affect white underwear, and delicate items may need a gentler cycle. Clothes covered in mud may be better washed separately from lightly soiled clothes.
Extra precautions make sense when someone has vomiting, diarrhea, a contagious infection or a weakened immune system. Follow fabric labels, use the warmest suitable setting, and dry items completely. People with athlete's foot should keep feet dry, change socks daily and avoid sharing socks or towels.
