Bangkok Floods Persist as Rain Begins to Ease

Heavy rain flooded Bangkok and other parts of Thailand, disrupting travel, schools and daily life. On September 28, city officials estimated about 329,000 households, or 700,000 people, had been affected in the capital. Lat Krabang, Bang Kapi, Khan Na Yao, Sai Mai, Suan Luang and Saphan Sung were among the hardest-hit districts. Rain eased, but water remained in streets and homes.
Officials first needed to lower water in major canals. The canals receive water from roads and neighborhoods. When canal levels are high, they cannot take in as much new water, so pumps work in stages. Some communities would take longer to clear. Around 1,500 bedridden patients and others needing care moved to hospitals.
On September 27, a national report listed 174,803 affected households in 25 provinces outside the separate Bangkok count and eight deaths since mid-September. The government made September 28 and 29 special holidays for government offices in Bangkok and three nearby provinces to cut traffic and support emergency work; private businesses could decide their own schedules.
