Avalanche Hits Nepali Team Preparing Himlung Expedition

An avalanche struck an expedition camp on Himlung Himal in Nepal on Sunday morning. The 7,126-metre peak lies in the Nar Phu area of Manang district, close to the border with Tibet. The camp was being prepared for the autumn climbing season.
The people reported missing were Nepali guides and support workers, not foreign clients. They had gone ahead to prepare the camp, manage the route and fix ropes. The foreign climbers were expected to arrive five or six days later. Kitchen staff also help keep a high-altitude camp running.
Early reports put the number unaccounted for at 14. By Sunday evening, a rescue team had reached the area and recovered two bodies. Their identities were unknown, and reports did not establish whether they were included in the earlier count.
Rain, snow and low visibility delayed rescue plans. Helicopters and guides waited in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but poor conditions limited access. The incident followed several days of difficult weather in Nepal’s mountains, where heavy snowfall and rain also caused floods and landslides elsewhere.
