Why Is This Desert Museum Built Underground?

Sunday, October 25, 2026108 words2 minutes411 reads
A new museum opened in China's desert in September 2026. Visitors can see fossils: remains of animals from long ago. Silver shapes stand above the sand. But most rooms are about eight metres underground.
Why build there? Summers are very hot. Winters are very cold. Deep soil changes temperature slowly. It helps keep the rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter. The soil also protects much of the building from wind and sand.
Openings bring in fresh air and daylight. Machines can still cool the rooms. The designers expect to save electricity. However, years of use have not yet proved how much electricity the museum can save.
