Vermont Homes Form a Virtual Power Plant

Thousands of homes in Vermont have batteries. These batteries can keep lights on when a storm cuts the power. But they can also work together.
The local power company, Green Mountain Power, can use some stored energy when many people need electricity. This group of home batteries is called a virtual power plant. It is not one big building. It is many small batteries linked by software. The company says more than 5,000 customers are now part of the system. Before a possible storm, the company keeps power in the batteries for the homes. At busy times, the shared energy can reduce pressure on the electricity grid. This may lower costs and reduce the need for polluting power plants.
