Russian attacks have destroyed millions of books in Ukraine. Each attack hit places where books are printed, stored or sold. The loss comes as children return to school after the summer.
The Ukrainian Book Institute says about 13 million books were lost in July and August. Some were school textbooks. Publishers now need to print new books so pupils can learn. The total may change as workers check the damage.
Ukraine says the attacks also harm its culture. Books are not only things to read. They help people share language, stories and ideas. A publisher can lose both books and the money needed to make more.
