Earth's Core May Change Day Length

A day is often called 24 hours. But Earth does not turn at exactly the same speed all the time. Over many years, a day can become a few milliseconds longer or shorter. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second, so people do not feel this change.
Scientists have a new idea about why this happens. Deep inside Earth is a solid inner core. Around it is a very thick rocky layer called the mantle. When the inner core changes its movement a little, it may pull on the mantle. This can change the mantle's rotation a little too. Then the length of a day changes. The study says this may be an important reason for these tiny changes.
