AI Searches for Patterns in Animal Sounds

Scientists are using artificial intelligence, or AI, to study animal sounds. Whales click, birds call and dolphins whistle. AI can search huge collections of recordings much faster than people can listen to them.
The first goal is to find patterns. A computer can group similar sounds, tell animals apart and connect a sound with what was happening nearby. This may help scientists learn more about animal communication.
But AI cannot translate animal talk into English. Scientists do not yet know what most whale clicks or bird calls mean. Animals make sounds that work a little like names, but animal communication is not human language. Researchers say observation is still needed before people try to send signals back to wild animals.
